The DLR is Germany’s national research centre for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in Aeronautics, Space, Energy, Transport and Security is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. Being one of over 30 institutes, in the Institute of Transportation Systems more than 150 scientists from various disciplines are working on innovative solutions for automotive and railway systems as well as traffic management. In the Automotive domain, we study driver behaviour, stress and strain on drivers, and accidents to derive the requirements for future driver assistance systems. Their implementation is evaluated in driving simulators, test drives and in real-world road traffic.
Our main activities/tasks in HoliDes are: As part of DLR’s comprehensive research efforts, in HoliDes we will define a seamless workflow suitable to the development of adaptive systems. We will implement this workflow while developing a driver model which helps to predict trajectories and manoeuvres conforming optimally to individual drivers’ expectations. This driver model will be part of a highly automated demonstrator vehicle. For this vehicle, we will also research the transitions between grades of automation using innovative task analysis methods.
In HoliDes, we can extend and refine our competences developed during previous EU and ARTEMIS projects such as D3CoS and CESAR. Not only will our workflows for adaptive driver assistance be more structured, formalized and seamless. We will also have a runnable prototype of such an adaptive assistance, integrated in a car driving in real traffic. Our theoretical and empirical research of the interaction between assistance and driver will boost our understanding of drivers’ behaviour and cognition.
